Small Business Success: Ben Edwards Photography

“The artist’s world is limitless. It can be found anywhere, far from where he lives or a few feet away. It is always on his doorstep.”  -Paul Strand

Is it possible to pursue your artistic passion and create a successful business?

As our series continues we are introduced to an ideal guide to shed light on the journey of the creative professional, Benjamin Edwards.  Benjamin and his wife Lauren lead a highly successful Wedding, Portrait and Documentary photography business based out of Bend, Oregon- Benjamin Edwards Photography. They combine brilliant talent with deep heart, traveling near and far with one goal in mind: “to document the beautiful.”

The merging of creative talent and business savvy can be a challenge for some on the entrepreneurial path. Ben joins us today to address this and to share what he and Lauren have learned on their road to professional and creative success.

Q. Ben, what inspired you to begin your photography business?

A. I’ve always enjoyed photography, but it wasn’t until my wedding was photographed by a internationally known wedding photographer, Kevin Kubota, that I realized the power of the lens.  Kevin is now a good friend and constant source of inspiration.

Q. What do you enjoy most about photography?

A. The most rewarding thing about my job is using my gifts to create positive change in the world, there’s nothing like it.

Q. Every business carries challenges- what is the most challenging element for you?

A. I’d have to say the availability of digital technology, while it also is a blessings in so many ways, has afforded just about anyone the opportunity to be a “photographer.”  While this isn’t a bad thing entirely, there is much more to running a photography business than taking good pictures.  Those entering the market who don’t understand it, ultimately drive down the cost for those trying to make a living at it.

Q. Based on what you have learned along the way, what advice would you share with those interested in starting their own business?

A. Understand business and marketing. Learning about business isn’t as fun (for some) as being out there taking amazing images, but again, it’s a business, so you need to know how to run it like a business if you want any degree of success.  I would encourage anyone who is interested in becoming a professional photographer to do an internship with a current professional to learn the ins and outs and to decide at the end of the day if it’s something they really want to do.  Most professionals will gladly speak of their own experience and really, should do so.  By sharing our knowledge we help grow the level of those who will come after us.

Q. What has helped you to stay strong during the economic ebbs and flows?

A. I call it the twoknees approach, I get down on my two knees and ask, “what next?”

Q. Is there any business or life advice you have received that has helped you along the way?

A. Jump in 100%.  If you only put 50% into something you’ll never see a full return.  It has to be 100%.

Q. What has been the most important factor for you in the success of your business?

A. Hands down the twoknees approach.  We’ve been blessed not to have to market.  Most of our business is referral and knowing that each one of those clients we receive are a complete blessing and gift.

Q. How do you define true success- both in life and in business?

A. Being you.  I believe each of us were created with certain gifts.  If we share those gifts with others, the world is a better place.  I’ve seen it happen and it’s tremendous.  Be you, no one else can do it, nor should they try. This can be used in both life and business and really, I’m not entirely sure they should be separated.  I’m not sure I would be a success if I was only successful at one or the other, they go hand in hand as a part of who we are.

Q. What consistently inspires you creatively?

A. I think the single most inspirational component to my life and the success of our business is our faith.  While I may see something or have a conversation that yields a sense of inspiration, it always comes back to “why” I’m creating what I’m creating.  It’s that faith that leads me to want to create in a positive manner and that “why” question keeps me on track.

In summary, Ben approaches his business with heart, faith and authenticity. He recommends developing solid business and marketing skills- whether or not this comes naturally and committing 100% to the process.

Ben and Lauren serve as a great source of inspiration to creative professionals, showing that it is possible to pursue what you love and create a successful business model to support this. As Ben shares on his website:

“Many of us are still trapped in the cocoon, waiting for our opportunity to fly. I want to encourage and inspire those who feel trapped in the notion that they have nothing to offer the world to break free.”

  4. Ben and Lauren are one of the most amazing photographers! They’ve worked with many of our clients and the memories created are amazing. I mostly love the connection that they make with each bride and groom, it truly makes the photography special and unique.

This is well said, Tricia- it’s so true. You can tell they genuinely care for each person they photograph.
